"Rising APIDA Artists" by Nethaka Jayatilake

In recent years, a captivating narrative has unfolded within the realm of art and culture, one that has propelled Asian Pacific Desi American (APIDA) artists to soaring heights of creative expression. Across diverse mediums like literature, music, and a myriad of artistic forms, the trajectory of APIDA artists has been marked by a remarkable ascent. These creators have carved out their identities as powerful representatives of the APIDA community, capturing the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide. One major APIDA artist would be Casey Thai Luong, also known as keshi (stylized in lowercase).

As a child, Luong would often feel disassociated in his community due to his heritage. Living in Houston, Texas, he couldn’t find a sense of belonging with his ethnicity. In a recent interview, he examines his childhood stating, “I wasn't the same as my American friends either, who would have the traditional American experience with the barbecues and all”. Even with a sense of disconnection, he began to slowly realize his cultural heritage and only regrets not being able to speak Vietnamese, hindering his relationship with his grandparents. His music career unofficially started at the age of 13, where he was influenced by his grandfather's music book and works by John Mayer and Ed Sheeran.

After graduating from University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Luong would go on to work as an oncology nurse for 2 years. It was then that his dreams of being a musician became a reality.

With the stage name, “Keshi” as a connection to his fiancée’s parents nickname for him,

Luong signed with Island Records and began his successful career in the musical industry. With around 11.4 million listeners per month, Luong’s dreams of being a musician since he was 13 were fulfilled. As an APIDA artist, he struggled with identity and it can be seen through his exquisite lyrical manner, as well as his song covers.

Yet, it's not just the realm of music that bears witness to the APIDA artistic renaissance. Literature too has been graced by the brilliance of artists such as Viet Thanh Nguyen, a distinguished recipient of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Through his powerful prose, Nguyen delves deep into the complex issues surrounding immigration, offering a profound insight into the tumultuous journey of newcomers in a foreign land. He passionately asserts that the narratives of immigrants can serve as a beacon, illuminating the immigrant experience, dispelling misconceptions, and nurturing the growth of empathy within our society. What unites these diverse artists, regardless of their chosen medium, is their unwavering commitment to the pursuit of racial and social equality. The APIDA artist community has emerged as a formidable force for change, pushing the boundaries of social awareness to unprecedented levels that demand our attention and action. The resonance of their voices reverberates far beyond their art, reaching into the very heart of social justice discourse.

The phenomenon of APIDA artists' rise is intricately woven into the fabric of changing demographics, especially within the United States. As the APIDA community continues to gain prominence, so too does their influence and their ability to represent their cultures authentically. This dynamic shift has catalyzed a profound transformation in the cultural landscape, one that finds expression through their art. In a world where the digital realm reigns supreme, social media and digital platforms have emerged as powerful tools of influence. APIDA artists have adeptly harnessed these platforms, leveraging their reach to propagate messages of racial equality and social justice. Their impact is not confined by borders; it resonates globally, inspiring conversations and change in communities across the world, with a keen focus on addressing racial disparities, particularly in the United States.

The ascent of APIDA artists is a resounding testament to the fusion of artistic brilliance, demographic shifts, and the technological age. As these artists continue to flourish, their impact reverberates not only through their respective fields but also through the collective consciousness of a world yearning for positive change.
