One major APIDA artist would be Casey Thai Luong, also known as keshi (stylized in lowercase).
As a child, Luong would often feel disassociated in his community due to his heritage. Living in Houston, Texas, he couldn’t find a sense of belonging with his ethnicity. In a recent interview, he examines his childhood stating, “I wasn't the same as my American friends either, who would have the traditional American experience with the barbecues and all”. Even with a sense of disconnection, he began to slowly realize his cultural heritage and only regrets not being able to speak Vietnamese, hindering his relationship with his grandparents. His music career unofficially started at the age of 13, where he was influenced by his grandfather's music book and works by John Mayer and Ed Sheeran.
After graduating from University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Luong would go on to work as an oncology nurse for 2 years. It was then that his dreams of being a musician became a reality.
With the stage name, “Keshi” as a connection to his fiancée’s parents nickname for him,
Luong signed with Island Records and began his successful career in the musical industry. With around 11.4 million listeners per month, Luong’s dreams of being a musician since he was 13 were fulfilled. As an APIDA artist, he struggled with identity and it can be seen through his exquisite lyrical manner, as well as his song covers.
